There is a natural tension between the classical and romantic impulse. On the one hand the desire for order, continuity and a conceptual understanding of what one is doing. On the romantic side though: a love of the new, the colorful, and artistically: the unique, spontaneous and even fragmentary. I have experimented with indulging these potentially contradictory impulses as though one could choose sides and find each leading to a separate reality. However, I find the best art ultimately acts as bridge between the two. Finding a connection between what is fleeting and ephemeral and what is lasting and meaningful.
