Each November, just in time for the gift-giving season, Rowe Fine Art Gallery proves the old adage that good things do, indeed, come in small packages. The gallery’s annual small works show, Itty, Bitty…and Oh, So Pretty!, features paintings that measure no more than 12 x 12 inches, tabletop-size sculptures and jewelry. Whether you’re shopping for holiday gifts, your space is limited or you’re just beginning to collect art, there’s something for everyone at this show, which opens Friday, November 7, at 4 p.m.
Almost all of the gallery’s artists will have works exhibited in Itty, Bitty…and Oh, So Pretty!. Gallery owner and bronze sculptor Ken Rowe will showcase Canyon Song (4”H x 4.5”W x 1.75”D) featuring a very vocal raven. Ken, who is known for his life-size bronzes, appreciates the challenge of sculpting small. “Finessing something as small as Canyon Song presents its own intricacies,” says Ken. “But technicalities aside, I wanted to craft something that was accessible to a wide range of people, whether they are shopping for a gift, downsizing their home, visiting Sedona without much room in their luggage to bring something back or dipping their toes into collecting art.”
Sculptor Kim Kori’s Desert Graffiti (5”H x 5”W x 3.5”D) will also be in the spotlight. The colorful bronze depicts a lizard sunning itself on a red rock carved with an indigenous petroglyph of, you guessed it, a lizard.
Mixed-media sculptor Shirley Eichten Albrecht has a new piece to unveil, too. The metallic cobalt-blue gourd is fittingly titled Blue Moon (12”H x 10.5”W x 7.5”D). “It was the geode that actually led me to create this piece,” explains Shirley. “This is the first time I have ever sculpted in such a strong color. I wanted the geode to be the center of attention. The weaving with beads on the opposite side added a necessary touch of bling.”
If you’re more interested in paintings, Lynn Heil’s Sedona Classic (6”H x 10”W) captures the view from Sedona’s Posse Grounds Park in oil on panel. And Gary Jenkin’s mesmerizing Mountain Lion with Butterfly (12”H x 12”W) mixed-media painting is a departure for an artist usually associated with intricate depictions of flowers and, more recently, cacti. Trust us, you have to see this one in person.
Finally, the gallery’s newest artist, Lesley Aine McKeown, will exhibit her wearable art featuring exotic gemstones. Lesley says her work is inspired by many things, from architecture to nature to social structures. “ I am very interested in forms, so the perception of dimension and how to create it in jewelry are constant inspirations.”
Come by the gallery during the opening of Itty, Bitty…and Oh, So Pretty! and meet some of the artists behind these miniature masterpieces. The show continues the entire month, giving you plenty of time to get a jump start on holiday shopping.
