Chris Wiseman, Painter
The architecture of man, the architecture of nature - closely observed - is the focus of Santa Fe-based artist Chris Wiseman.
Graduating from Arizona State University College of Architecture in 1971, Wiseman practiced in this field for 40 years; his oeuvre reflects this combination of giving form to imagination, deep reverence for nature, and the extensive practice of art and architecture.
Growing up in small-town Wyoming, the Tetons were Wiseman’s backdrop, inspiring his artistic instincts - and when, as a teen, he attended the 1965 World Fair this solidified his dream of becoming an architect and artist. 30 years later, this aspiration came full circle when he was invited to display a one-man show, Bridges of New York, at the site of that same World Fair, the New York Hall of Science.
Wiseman worked in New York City for 17 years, summering in the Berkshires where he became fascinated with the intrinsic charm and character of New England and began painting buildings throughout the area. Now retired, he turns his full attention to visual art, lending immortality to the iconic red rock structures of Sedona and capturing the majesty of nature’s accidental architecture. Light and shadow dance beneath expressive stormy skies, emphasising the enduring strength and quiet longevity of these organic monuments.
